She will visit two countries over five days.
First Lady Jill Biden has arrived in Namibia, starting her visit to the African continent. Before her initial meeting with the Namibian president, the first lady said, “We wanted to come because this is a young democracy and we want to support democracies around the world.”
A senior administration official said the first lady’s focus in Namibia is the “role of young people in continuing to shape their democracy and advance health cooperation.”
She is scheduled to meet with other officials of that nation before moving on to Kenya where she will “look at the impacts of drought on families and communities hardest hit,” officials said on Tuesday. In both Namibia and Kenya, the first lady will engage officials on matters such as the empowerment of women and youth, along with gender-based violence, as well as sexual and reproductive health programs and HIV support.
The U.S. has increased interest in the region as China has made significant investments on the continent.
